This morning, Prof. Weisong Wen of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, served as a guest speaker at a seminar focused on the development of the Low-Altitude Economy (LAE) in Hong Kong. The event was hosted by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC).

The discussion centered on the practical aspects of establishing an LAE in the city. Key topics included:

Navigating the operational challenges presented by Hong Kong’s dense urban environment. Developing and implementing necessary regulatory frameworks for “smart skies.” Identifying business opportunities in sectors such as building facade maintenance, aerial photography, and infrastructure monitoring. The panel also referenced the government’s selection of 38 sandbox pilot projects in March, with some already in the testing phase, to advance LAE applications in areas like emergency response and logistics.

Prof. Wen joined a panel of speakers that included Mr. Chun To Wong, Assistant Secretary for the Transport and Logistics Bureau, and Prof. Lawrence POON, Head of Emerging Technology at MTR Corporation. The discussion was steered by Mr. Patrick S Lee, Convenor of the HKGCC’s Smart City Working Group.
